As a life long book lover, I was thrilled to enter the world of book design as a major pursuit. I've designed books for trade and educational publishers.
I've also designed many e-books, working one on one with authors who are self-publishing.
A design reminiscent of a game board was the idea behind this book cover.

A photomontage created in Photoshop with Ken surrounded by flying food was a fun project to work on.
Canada's top motivational speaker, Mike Lipkin asked for a design that was simple and eye catching. This hot red is perfect for Mike, who is a charismatic speaker.
Blue and green were the right colours for a finance book, with the celebrity money experts, Gordon Pape and David Tafler, pictures front and centre.
Making a financial book warm and inviting was the idea behind this design solution. Instead of photography, I created a typographic design using a mix of warm and cool colours.
The simple cover was designed to match the look and feel of Deborah Moskovitch's website, The Smart Divorce.
It's a big design challenge to come up with images for marketing books that go beyond the standard stock photography. I used the pebbles on the beach to suggest the myriad ways to market to a variety of different customers.
This illustration was art directed by me, using the talents of Stephanie Power. We went for a fun, retro feel for the cover, to match the friendly and light approach this book had to dieting and healthy eating.
Making finance friendly. The warm photo of the author Sherry Cooper with a classic type treatment and a bronze metallic finish on the jacket made this content approachable.

In 1986, I had my first comics published in Now Magazine, under their banner Stand Up Comic. Comics have always been my first love, the merging images and words has always felt right to me, as an artist. Pop Art, animation and graphic novels continue to inspire me.
Marias that appeared through songs that went through my head. Sound of Music, West Side Story, The Letter, (a great song by Johnny Rivers and others) and the outro theme song to the 60s SuperMarionation TV show "Stingray".

I chose a blue that is fresh and clean, and the browns are friendly and dependable. The tangled shapes are organized neatly in a box.
Toronto's CN Tower becomes a big flower for the bee to dive into. The bee, pollination and flowers are themes important to gardeners and garden writers.
The logo was printed on three different coloured business cards, with colours chosen to make you think of sweet cake icing.
